VPN (Virtual Private Network) is private network which companies use to communicate throughout the world. The basic purpose of establishing a virtual private network is to communicate too far of places with encrypted and secure communication mode. There are three types of VPN (Virtual Private Network) networks such as remote access VPN (Virtual Private Network), site to site intranet and site to site extranet .when the single VPN (Virtual Private Network) access is required and a simple laptop or PC is connected to the other end that network is called RAS (remote access system).when a gateway is established at various different locations but of the same company for a secure communication lines then we term it as site to site intranet. Intranet helps internal users communicate with each other. Site to site extra net also have different communication gateways but the purpose of extra net is to communicate with the external business partners. The purpose of extranet is to provide enough business security, because only authenticated users can make use of it. Businesses using VPN (Virtual Private Network) enjoys the fast and secure transfer of data. They can make same policies as other businesses. This mode of communication offers enough reliability and ease of handling the network.
How VPN Works
As compared to the other networks the architecture of this network is much simple. First step of establishing VPN (Virtual Private Network) is installation of client software. The modem of the user is connected to the firewall first and then it is connected to the main server. When the main connection is established the VPN (Virtual Private Network) software, the workstation devices connect to the main server or the VPN (Virtual Private Network) server through the secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) tunnel. The data has to travel through this tunnel first and then it proceeds further. The outer layer of the tunnel is surrounded by dangerous internet viruses. This network is fully secured because of the secure tunnel. The data is encrypted at the sender end when the data travels to the receiver it can be decrypted. When the data is sent the remote computers authenticate the data, and this is due to the secure tunnel connection. The VPN (Virtual Private Network) server provides security when the ISPs provide you with an unsecured internet connection. The data cannot be read by the other due to strong encryption and decryption modes. VPN (Virtual Private Network) ensures that all data travels through the tunnel before reaching to the remote computers.
Security of the Virtual Private Network (VPN)
When the VPN (Virtual Private Network) server is active the presence of the firewall and the security tunnel does not allow any data to be entered without passing through the tunnel. Therefore an external user cannot make use or exploit the clandestine data or information of the company. The security of the network is ensured because the other remote computers in the network who are also functioning on the same server cannot be trusted fully. If several employees are working for different employers from one and the same internet café, all the clients would be at risk of losing data. However the firewall and the tunnel security assist the data encryption which provides enough security to the network. More over the use of wireless technologies such as Wi-Fi and others also pose a security threat. The encryption and decryption protocols solve this matter.
